Titus - 5 week study (Intro week one)

For the rest of July and a few weeks into August I'll be taking part in a Bible study on Titus. I'll be posting the notes for the Bible study here on the blog for anyone that would like to follow along.

Goal for our study: That our faith and knowledge of the truth grow further, and that growth then leads to godliness (Titus 1:1).

Overview of our 5 week study:

Week 1 - (7/13) Introduction, purpose & setting of Titus.

Week 2 - (7/20) The challenges & solutions for Titus (and the church).

Week 3 - (7/27) Specific instructions for Titus’ teaching

Week 4 - (8/3) Authority, controversy, and devotion.

Week 5 - (8/10) Conclusion: Titus in our time.

  • Interpretation - Glass half full? Half empty? (How do you know if a glass is half full or half empty? You have to see the glass to know! If the glass is hidden behind something, you won't be able to interpret if it's full, empty, or halfway between. You have to know something to be able to interpret something! So let's get to know Titus, to understand and interpret this part of God's Word in our lives).

  • Reading full letter to Titus (Make some initial impressions)

  • To whom was this letter originally written?

  • Why was Titus originally written?

  • What issues are raised as problems?

  • What solutions are instructed?

  • How is Titus helpful to us?

  • How is Titus instructive today?

Self Study questions for week 1:

How would you describe the person Titus to someone who wasn’t able to attend Bible study?

What would you say the book of Titus discusses to someone who wasn’t able to attend Bible study?

What would you say was Paul’s goal in writing to Titus (Review 1:1-6)?

Titus is one of the shorter books of the Bible, but as a letter it wouldn’t fit on a greeting card! Who is someone you wish you could write a long letter to?

Paul quoted a popular saying about the people of Crete (Titus 1:12), what sayings describe your local community? Your family? Your relationship to God’s word?

How would you describe expectations for elders (Review 1:5-9)?

Are actions or words more emphasized by Paul in 1:16?

What was the instruction for Titus regarding rebuking or ignoring (Review 1:13-14)?
