Take a Trip Around Space

*One thing I've wanted to do was have a spot to share some of our fun homeschooling activities. I am going to try to share some activities every week that we do. Please note that I do get commission from any books purchased via the links.

Space Activities

Homeschooling science has always been an area that I have struggled in completing. I have tried different curriculum's but none of them have stuck. Our oldest is only 8, and I find that a lot of our science lessons can be based on books we have and books from the library. I hope that by sharing some of our books and activities that I can help you plan fun and easy lessons for your kids and realize how much kids can learn from non-curriculum books.

The first thing I did when designing this months lessons was the look at the books offered at the library, see what books we already had, and check out UBAM to see if there were any I wanted to purchase. The books above are the books that made up the most of our space unit. You should be able to find them at your local library. If not, you can always purchase them here or find other similar books. I looked at these books and determined which topics I wanted to study with our 8 and 4 year old. Since our kids are on the younger end, we did a brief study of these topics and spent 2-3 days a week on them.

Week 1: What is in Space
For this week, we learned about the different things that make up space such as planets, moons, asteroids, stars, and gasses. This week was our introduction so we watched Magic School Bus Lost in Space, and read the book. Our project was to create our own galaxies. We did part one the first week, and used q-tips and white/silver/yellow paint to make the galaxy stars on a piece of black paper.

Week 2:  Planets
Our second week, we studied a little bit about the planets. We learned about the differences in planets, moons and dwarf planets. I had picked up a hanging planet craft from the dollar bin at Target a few months ago, so we spent time coloring that while we watched a documentary about planets. We also spent time this week finishing our galaxy pictures. We cut on some circles from cardboard, glued colored paper on top and then glued them onto our galaxies. Our kids enjoyed making their own planets different sizes and choosing the amount they wanted in their own galaxies.

Week 3: Stars/Constellations
Our third week we focused on stars! I had planned to focus more on different constellations, but my kids weren't interested. So instead, we learned about stars and did a few different activities. We made a fort and turned on our start lights and pretended to be outside. We also watched a few videos about stars.

Week 4: Living in Space/Space station
Our 4th week we learned about living in space, and mainly focused on the international space station. We watched some videos on you tube from astronauts in space. The kids LOVED seeing how they live in space. Our son enjoyed how they had to go to the bathroom and eat food, while my daughter was surprised by how small and tight everything was. We also took this time to read a bit about satellites and how they are used for space travel and on the space station.

You can check out the books, activities and shows that we watched below.

5 Little Stars
5 little stars were out one night

One little star wined out of sight
